She also enjoys the arts, whether attending the symphony, Broadway shows or art museums. And, while Kathryn never passes on an opportunity to travel, her favorite destination is Fox Lake, Indiana.

Fox Lake was platted in the 1920s as the only lake in Steuben County, Indiana, that allowed Black families to buy property. (There are over 101 lakes in Steuben County.) Her paternal grandparents honeymooned at Fox Lake in the 1940s and later purchased a cottage of their own in 1962 after vacationing there for many summers in between.

Kathryn is 3rd generation Fox Lake and her first “swim” was at the tender age of 3 months old. Later, as the precocious toddler that she was, she dubbed herself Kathryn “Fox Lake” Hawkins. Her family has been active in the Property Owners’ Association and Kathryn followed suit becoming Chair of the Board in 2013.  Recognizing the need to preserve the rich, cultural heritage of Fox Lake, she completed the process of forming the Fox Lake Preservation Foundation, a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to protect the African American heritage and natural and built environs of Fox Lake through fundraising, educational programming and community outreach.

Kathryn received a BBA in Marketing from University of Notre Dame and a Juris Doctor from IU McKinney School of Law – Indianapolis. An Indianapolis native, Kathryn served on and held leadership positions, including President, on the North Central Alumni Association.
