STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Angola’s Fox Lake Preservation Foundation was one of two groups awarded the 2024 Sandi Servaas Memorial Award, Indiana Landmarks announced in a press release Tuesday.

The award, given to Fox Lake Preservation Foundation and Muncie-area “The Time Travelers Program” by Indiana Landmarks, recognizes achievements in historic preservation. As the winner of the organizational category, Fox Lake received $2,000 and a “No Doors to Lock Out the Past” sculpture by late Indiana native artist John McNaughton.

Fox Lake was first developed in the 1920s as a resort for African Americans, and families still live and spend their summers there today. The Fox Lake Preservation Foundation was started in 2020 to protect the history, cultural heritage and environment of the lake.

Kathryn Hawkins, Fox Lake Preservation Foundation president and third-generation Fox Lake resident, said she appreciates the recognition of the foundation’s work and hopes it can continue for years to come.

“We want Fox Lake to be remembered and remain standing for the next 100 years,” Hawkins said. “It’s thrilling to receive this award because I feel like so many people are working to get places of importance on the map, so being recognized for the work we’re doing in this small piece of the world is just so flattering.”
